Ana Lucia Aleman

Ana Lucia Aleman is a young Indigenous woman of strong social consciousness that has developed and is managing a multi-faceted project for Indigenous Peoples on the North Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua. Working through the Center for Indigenous Peoples’ Autonomy and Development (CIPAD), Ana Lucia promotes Indigenous Peoples’ self-determination through education, training, and cultural programs for her community, especially young people. Ana Lucia is an example to young Indigenous women on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua. She demonstrates in her daily work that despite racism, sexism, and the extremely harsh conditions of life in a region plagued by poverty and lack of basic services, young women can play important leadership roles to create a better life for their community.
