MADRE participated in the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain from July 7-12, 2002. A MADRE delegation, consisting of MADRE staff and representatives of our sister organization from Rwanda, traveled to Barcelona to advocate for affordable, life-saving drugs and to demand government accountability for a concerted global response to the AIDS crisis. While corporate sponsors sought to control the proceedings and presentation of the conference, non-governmental organizations, including MADRE, called for worldwide commitments including: the donation of $10 billion per year to a global AIDS fund; anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment for two million people in poor countries by 2004; lower ARV drug prices in industrialized countries and universal access to generics in poor countries by 2004; and a new global partnership between governments and NGOs recognizing the primary role of NGOs in the global fight against AIDS.
