UN World Conference on Human Rights Vienna, Austria (1993)

The Vienna Conference brought together delegates from governments and international human rights NGOs to review and assess the progress made in the area of human rights since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human rights in 1948. In Vienna, MADRE facilitated the participation of women human rights activists from Latin America and the Balkans. As a result of the hard work of MADRE and many other women's NGOs, the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action was the first international agreement to recognize women's rights as human rights, to call for the elimination of gender-based violence and prioritize the "full and equal participation" of women in all levels of civil, political, economic, social and cultural life.
