Public Education

MADRE believes that raising public awareness in the US is an essential corollary to supporting women's community initiatives in developing countries. In embattled communities around the world, we hear a common refrain from women working for peace and justice: "if people in the United States really understood the impact of their government's policies, they would demand a change."

MADRE works to communicate the real-life effects of US foreign policy on women and their families around the world. Through our Public Education program, we unmask the root causes of poverty and injustice and insist on solutions that have more than a temporary "band-aid" effect. We are activists and advocates, encouraging our 23,000 members and the general US public to move beyond education into action.

MADRE's research, publications, speaking tours, delegations, media work, and internships help educate people in the US about the impact of US foreign policy, and provide concrete ways to support women's human rights.

Articles and Publications: MADRE's publications explore the impact of US policies on women and families around the world and highlight women's work for human rights in their communities and internationally.

Speaking Tours: MADRE conducts biannual speaking tours to educate the public about US foreign policy, human rights crises around the world and the initiatives for peace and justice of MADRE's sister organizations.

Voyages With A Vision: MADRE sends delegations to the communities of our sister organizations to foster a first-hand understanding of human rights struggles and facilitate an exchange of friendship and support.

Media Program: MADRE Executive Director Vivian Stromberg and MADRE Associate Director Yifat Susskind are regularly interviewed by local, national and international media, for television, print and radio and film.

Internships: MADRE internships are a great way to gain work experience and support MADRE's work with women and families worldwide.
